Eurex Derivatives Forum 2022 – thought leadership in challenging times

This year’s Derivatives Forum was once again special in many ways. We already had to deal with COVID-19 last year, and the virus is still present, but we are now additionally confronted with the terrible war in Ukraine. A war that affects us all, both privately and in our business dealings, as Eurex CEO Michael Peters said in his welcoming speech.

"Long-believed certainties and self-evident facts are turned upside down."

This makes it even more important for our industry to come together at events such as the Derivatives Forum, to share know-how and discuss the upcoming challenges. Our event may have evolved and adapted to the circumstances over the years, from a face-to-face to a completely virtual meeting last time to a hybrid version this year. What remains unchanged is the high quality of its content and its speakers and the great interest it generates every time.

This year, we were able to welcome more than 1,100 participants, 800 on site at the Congress Center and another 350 virtually. A keynote speech was given by Deutsche Bank’s Chief Administrative Officer Stefan Simon, before the first panel discussion of the event started. “Navigating politics in 2022” was the title of the lively discussion with Thomas Book, Member of Executive Board, Deutsche Börse; Martin Lück, Investment Strategist, BlackRock; Stefan Simon, Chief Administrative Officer, Deutsche Bank and Florian Toncar, Parliamentary State Secretary, Federal Ministry of Finance Germany. The panel was skillfully moderated by Annette Weisbach, CNBC correspondent in Germany.

The panelists covered topics such as the global political framework post-COVID, the political and macro-economic developments within the EU and their implications for the financial markets, the European capital markets and the necessary next steps for advancing the Capital Markets Union as well as the future relationship between the EU and UK, and the future of pan-European regulations. An impressive list of topics for just 45 minutes, during which several interesting approaches and insights were shared.

"We all need to develop partnerships while at the same time reducing dependencies."

The afternoon belonged entirely to numerous parallel panels and keynotes on hot industry topics such as crypto currencies, Blockchain, ESG, and innovations in repo. After an evening of networking and reuniting with colleagues not seen in a long time, the second day of the event started with welcome remarks by Fiona van Echelpoel, Deputy Director General, DG Market Infrastructure & Payments, ECB, followed by the exchange leaders panel discussing the trends of driving change for global exchanges and how they are helping investors meet the challenges of the post-COVID world.

Michael Peters, Chief Executive Officer, Eurex, was happy to welcome his peers representing five exchanges in three continents.

"Market disruptions need market disruption rules provided by the respective CCPs and exchange operators, transparent and visible to market participants."

The gathering of exchange leaders was followed by another round of panels and keynotes on the many aspects of crypto and ESG investing, savings through cross margining, creating value through algorithms, thematic indexes, clearing innovations and trends, and many more.

Once again, the Digital Derivatives Forum has shown that relevant and pertinent topics can be engaging in any format, virtual or on-site. It was, however, definitely a great pleasure to be able to meet a lot of colleagues in person again and we hope to see you all next year.
