Total Return Futures – new participants enter the market
The markets continued their wait-and-see approach in May, with volumes relatively stable at a high level compared to the previous month. The outstanding notional value remained steady to slightly lower in line with the underlying indices, and TRF volumes mirror the markets in terms of activity. New participants continue to enter the market, and the liquidity in the SX5E and FTSE 100 TRF is sufficient to attract buy-side participation. Assumably, interest rates and the inflation cycle keep activity subdued in the equities space, but they are also the most likely catalysts to changes going forward. Stay tuned!
