Welcome to your MSCI update from Eurex, the leading exchange for MSCI Derivatives
Volumes have been increasing steadily and the segment is now well established and mature.
Open interest and volume development
The volumes in MSCI derivatives at Eurex have developed extremely well over the year. Since the last update in March, open interest has more than doubled, resulting in a total of more than 800,000 contracts (445,000 Futures and 357,000 Options) at the end of August. This translates into a notional value of EUR 10.7 bn in MSCI Futures and EUR 6.9 bn in MSCI Options.
Correspondingly, volumes have seen some dramatic increases with June expiry seeing over 750,000 futures trade. The most notable contract during the summer months has been the MSCI Emerging Markets Asia Index Futures that saw 119,000 contracts trade in June alone, bringing the year total to date to just shy of 250,000 as investors use the contract to hedge elements of their overall EM exposure in the European hours. Part of the success in building up trading volumes is an increased use by asset management firms, as well as greater support of the MSCI Futures by some of the major interdealer brokers.
With the growing open interest throughout the segment and September Futures roll just starting, it would be surprising if we will not see new record volumes in one product or the other this month.
